Although Ecuador is considered to be a relatively small country, its biodiversity is considered to be one of the best in world. It is known to have the greatest number of mammals per square meter. There are over 25,000 species of plants compared to only 17,000 in North America. It is home to 350 species of reptiles with 200 endemic species found in Galapagos alone. Approximately 1,600 birds are also found in Ecuador beating the number found in other parts of South America and Europe as well. This is also where the highest number of amphibians can be found. With these numbers, it is obvious how blessed this little nation is when it comes to natural resources.

The soil is great for the agriculture of vegetables and fruits. There are already a lot of organic farms present in the country. In the province of Loja, the Neverland Organic farm is a famous institution especially for people who would like to experience the farm life for a few days. This is a community farm where everybody helps everybody. Everything here is shared from the food and the tasks in the farm. They have a volunteer program where interested participants can take a few days off and live in the farm. This will give them a good chance to gain hands-on farming experiences and be knowledgeable on the methods of Ecuadorians in environmental sustainability. This is also an opportunity to learn eco-efficient steps in conserving the environment. All volunteers are asked to really bask in the experience and expected to take part in all the activities in the farm. Agriculture is the main source of income among many Ecuadorians. But due to other factors such as oil exploration, this sector has been neglected and has showed a major decline especially during the 1970’s. But the agricultural sector has shown an improvement in the 1980’s and has contributed to the 26.5% of labor force in the 1990’s contributing to 11% GDP of the year 2000. Most produce of the country are bananas, coffee, rice, sugar, tea, corn and other fruits among others. They are known to be a great exporter of beautiful flowers such as roses and carnations. Most of the highlands grown crops like corn, wheat, horsebeans and barley for local consumption. Cacao crops are grown by large corporations and are a major player in the export industry as well as bananas and coffee farming that are mostly grown by independent farmers in their small fincas.

Ecuador is known to be the biggest exporter of bananas in the world. This is followed by cacao which is considered to be a valuable export of the country. The coffee industry has also provided major contributions to the Ecuadorian economy in the early years of 1970’s but fell short in the succeeding decades due to a tough competition in the world market.
